Roofing Materials & Styles

Types of Roofing StylesGable Roof – This roofing style is one of the most common styles employed when it comes to roof constructions. The roof is comprised of two evenly sized pieces, joint at the ridge of the roof, at the same angle. When this technique is used more than once on a building, and more than one gable is formed, it is call cross gabled.

Hip Roof – Hip roofing is when all sides of the building have pieces sloping upwards, joint at the top. This style of roofing is often found in areas where strong winds are experienced; as they provide better bracing. There are differentiations of hip roofs, depending on the shape and size of the house. Pyramid hip and cross hipped are two of these variations, but are built with the same format.

Flat Roof – As the name imply, the roof is one horizontal flat layer. It does, however, have a slight slope to allow for water and rain to run down. Flat roofs are not as common as gable and hip roofs, but are more affordable. It is usually not used in areas of colder climates as ice dams or snow would remain immobile and would also prevent water flow.

Roofing Materials:Roofing materials are dependent on various factors, such as the building style, size, climate within it is situation and the client’s wants and budget.

Clay Tile – Regarding the cost of clay tiles, in comparison to other roofing materials, these tiles are more expensive. The advantage of clay tiles is that it comes in a variety of colours, which means you can personalise your home. This material has a long lifespan and requires little maintenance. If pressure is applied, however, the tiles can crack easily; which can make repairs difficult.

Concrete Tiles – Concrete tiles are good for their durability and long lifespan. It is an attractive roofing style, but repairs and installations can be complicated. Concrete tiles are often used as it is cheaper than other durable tile roofing, such a clay and slate.

Metal Roofing – Metal roofs are quite light of weight compared to other roofing materials. Metal roofing is also known to be more environmentally friendly than other roofing materials, and some are recyclable. It is very easy to paint, and can therefore be personalised in colour to suit the needs and wants of the client. A disadvantage is that in rainy weather metal roofing can become noisy. Even through metal roofing has the drawback of being more difficult to install, it comes with the advantage that it can be installed over existing roofs; partially due to its light weight.

Slate –Slate is a natural stone, and is known for its classy look. The beautiful European look, however, comes with a costly price. The tiles are available in a variety of colours; including red, green purple, gray and black and is known to be one of the most fire resistant roofing materials. These costly tiles do however generate a problem of fragility and can be difficult to install or repair.

TIPS

• Most roofs are replaced or repaired within in ten to fifteen years. Maintenance up to this period, however, is essential and fixing cracks and leaks will result in a longer last roof.
• When choosing the roofing materials, keep in mind that lighter colours and particular materials do not absorb the sun as much as others. This will, in the long run, save money as your home or office will be cooler compared to the contrary, cutting down on air-conditioning bills.

Timber Venetian Blind Restoration

Here is some advice given by one of our loyal suppliers, Amazing Clean Toowong, on timber venetian blind restoration, and what they do to help maintain your blinds.

Real timber and lacquered blinds can be high maintenance and often are neglected until the wood splits or the lacquer starts to peel. If property owners have purchased good quality blinds they should last a life-time if looked after properly. When disaster strikes, save yourself a lot of money and consider restoring these beautiful blinds rather than replacing them. Even individual blades can be replaced if the dog has decided to have a chew!

Very briefly, here is what we do:

Oiled Cedar Blinds:

  1. Clean and dry the blind
  2. Dis-assemble the blind
  3. Hand Oil (2-3 Coats as required)
  4. Re-assemble the blind, replacing the cord, acorns and bottom rail plugs as required.
  5.
